Our About Malamutes page has some good basic information. The links on that page, take you to "The Alaskan Malamute - an Introduction", "Alaskan Malamute FAQ" and "Alaskan Malamute Breed Standard - AKC"
Our Links page also has some good links for more information.
The book "The Alaskan Malamute: Yesterday and Today" is a detailed look at the breed. We don't necessarily subscribe to training methods described in the book, but other than that it provides excellent reference material.
The book "The New Complete Alaskan Malamute" by Maxwell Riddle, Beth J. Harris is also an excellent resource. Like the book above, it provides excellent history on the breed, covering areas not covered in the book above, but misses some areas covered by the above book. This book was originally published in the 1960s and has been updated several times over the years since then.
"Alaskan Malamutes" by Betsy Sikora-Siino is less detailed than the books above, but an excellent book.
Other available books on Alaskan Malamutes are a waste of money, and provide less than accurate information. They are inexpensive books with some pretty pictures of Mals, and maybe a page or two about Mals, but are interchangeable with books by the same publishers for other breeds. They don't even bother to edit their sections on 'equipment', but include a retractable leash as appropriate. We'd love to see that publisher walk an Alaskan Malamute with a retractable leash. (Wouldn't want to pay his medical expenses after that walk). These books are also filled with ads.
As new books come out, we'll do our best to review them on a timely basis and post them here if they rate as worthwhile.
You should know basic information about dog communications and how they think. Two very good books are "Dog Language" by Roger Abrantes, Alice Rasmussen and "The Dog's Mind" by Bruce Fogle
All of these books are available at Amazon from these links either as new or used books, which helps you tailor the books to your budget.
