Alaskan Malamutes have 2 layers of fur.

Malamutes have a thick, coarse guard coat - which is the top coat for protection. And an undercoat for insulation that regulates their body temperatures and keeps them warm or cool. Their fur is a very soft fine fur, except for the harsher guard coat. It is not harsh like a Doberman or German shepherd breed. If you were to get fur from your malamute on your pants, if you ran you hand down your pants it would ball up and easily thrown away. I personally find this hair much easier to maintain than many other breeds.

They shed their coats twice a year. It's called a "Blowing" of the coat. They do not necessarily have more fur than another dog, just longer fur. This Blowing of the coat will need to be brushed everyday. On average this to me is very easy to maintain if kept up with. All you need is a simple comb or doggie rake and a few minutes a day.

Mals have a naturally oily coat and do not often need baths like most dogs. And unlike typical breeds another plus to owning a Malamute is that because of their oily coats there is almost no doggy odor. They also like to clean themselves feline fashion.
