43. List of Graded Foods and How To Grade Foods

Many people in the past have contacted me about different types of dog foods. As I do not know all types of food out there, below is a new food evaluation system that I highly recommend to help you see if your dog food is a quality one. This is one of the best systems that I have found to help you determine if a dog food is a quality dog food or if you should get your dog on a different food. This system should help you choose the food that fits your dogs best.

It is highly recommended not to have a food with corn as an ingredient. Corn is not recommended to be in your dogs diet at all. But there are many other things that are not recommended. Check out this system below, and it should give you a good idea of what is best for your new furry friend.

Below the chart you will find information on what we feed here at Hudson's and what is recommended for our Hudson's dogs !!!

Note: Because there are food allergy points in the scoring system, evaluate a food as it pertains to your own dog!
Remember, just because it's a good dog food, it might not be good for your dog. Be sure to take into consideration your dogs breed, age, and dietary needs when choosing his food.
If your dog food isn't on the list, please evaluate yours and add it to the list!

Start with a grade of 100.
1 - for every listing of "by product" subtract 10 points.
2 - for every non-specific animal source (meat or poultry, meat meal, or animal) reference subtract 10 points.
3 - If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points.
4 - For every non-specific grain source (mill run, whole grains) subtract 5 points.
5 - If the same grain is listed 2 or more times in the first 5 ingredients (rice, rice flour, brewers rice all being "same grain"), subtract 5 points.
6 - If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points.
7 - If it contains any artificial dyes or colorants subtract 3 points.
8 - If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn subtract 3 points.
9 - If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points.
10 - If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points.
11 - If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points.
12 - If it contains soy or soybeans subtract 2 points.
13 - If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat) subtract 1 point.
14 - If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef) subtract 1 point.
15 - If it contains salt subtract 1 point.

Extra Credits:
1 - If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points.
2 - If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist (not television personalities) add 5 points.
3 - If the food is baked, not extruded, add 5 points.
4 - If the food contains probiotics add 5 points.
5 - If the food contains fruit add 3 points.
6 - If the food contains vegetables (not corn or grains) add 3 points.
7 - If the meat sources are hormone and antibiotic free add 2 points.
8 - If the food contains barley, add 2 points.
9 - If the food contains flax seed oil (not just flax seed) add 2 points.
10 - If the food contains oats or oatmeal add 1 point.
11 - If the food contains sunflower oil add 1 point.
12 - For every different meat protein source (chicken, fish, turkey, lamb et al) add 1 point.
13 - If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin add 1 point.
14 - If the vegetables have tested pesticide free add 1 point.

Grading:
A = 94 - 100
B = 86 - 93

My preferred food for adult Malamutes is mixing Premium Edge-Salmon; Premium Edge-Chicken or Diamond Chicken & Rice; Diamond Lamb & Rice. So if you came to my kennel and looked at our food there would be three types of dog food mixed in one meal. I recommend that you choose two - prefer three different types of food and mix them.
Premium Edge Salmon   Premium Edge Chicken   Diamond Chicken and Rice   Diamond Lamb and RIce
