Nikko initially went to a family who wanted a family pet and assured me know they would be going to Puppy Kindergarten and Obedience training with him. They knew they'd be able to contact me at any time with questions. They never did contact me with any problems, but they did have problems.

The story has a happy ending though and Nikko is with a WONDERFUL family. Read their story below.

Jolene

Hi Jolene;

I am writing to you about Nikko- our 160 lb Alaskan Malamute who came from Hudson. Let me tell you his story, from the beginning, as this boy had a rough start after he left your home and before he came to ours.

"Alaskan Malamute for Sale. 8 months old- Male- $1800" was the ad I saw in our local paper. I called the number and chatted with the man who owned Nikko. He said he was too big, too strong and was chewing through the drywall in their garage and they needed to find a home for him. My husband and I made the 15 minute drive to check him out, as I was looking for another male to add to our kennel. Well, when we got there, Nikko was in the garage, walled into a corner with plywood and he had, indeed, started to eat the drywall. He jumped up and placed his paws on top of his "crate" and gave us a friendly wooooooooo. At this time there was a large amount of loose stool in his area and a small, filthy plastic water bucket. Ok, I thought, the owners probably didn't get a chance to clean it yet. The husband came out and we chatted about Nikko; his behaviors, attitude, etc. The man complained that Nikko was always getting loose and running down the road to play with the German Shepherd 10 houses or so away. I said to myself "No, really? A malamute finding a way out? And then to go and play? How dare he!" But, again, I didn't say anything. We asked to brush Nikko (which he loved) and we took him for a short walk (on a choke collar that the guy provided and Nikko pulled anyway, and had diarrhea again, on the short walk). We also wanted to know what kind of dog food Nikko was eating, because he looked mal- nourished/ underfed. They had him on a generic store brand food- full of fillers, dye and grains. Well, we made an appointment with him to meet again in a few days and I was going to bring my female to meet Nikko. That meeting went very well; she put him in his place in 5 minutes! After that, it was wrestle city. So, we decided to make an offer to purchase Nikko. They wanted $1800 for an 8 month old, intact male that didn't know his own name. I said no, how about 750? We agreed on $800, with a 2 page contract that I wrote, which included bringing him to obedience classes, weight pulling, agility and backpacking.

We took Nikko immediately to our local veterinarian, with stool samples. Nikko was diagnosed with several types of intestinal parasites and whipworm- he was a very sick little boy when we got him. They (his previous owners) had only taken him to the vet once in his 8 months. Well, after multiple visits and large expenses, Nikko is now a neutered, healthy, active, crate trained, happy Alaskan Malamute. He has graduated from Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced classes at our local PetSmart. He has competed in IWPA weight pull events (wheel and snow pulls) and attends weight pull practices. We are working on agility lessons with him soon. We started working on his Canine Good Citizen test, although he is kind of a "velcro- dog". He has pulled me on my dog sled with my oldest male and he is friends with our whole entire pack (even our 40 lb Siberian Husky!). Actually, Nikko is the only dog that gets along with all of the other dogs. He leans on us for his snuggle time and expects to be rubbed all over- especially his shoulders and legs.

For such an inadvertently abusive upbringing, (because I really don't think his previous parents consciously neglected him) Nikko really does have a good heart. And, beneath all the bravado and the attitude, is the soul of a really good dog. And he is Mine.
