Jolene,

When are we going to see you in the movies.

Attached are recent photos of Sitka and Willow doing what they do best... have fun in the woods.

They are doing really well. Sitka is still somewhat shy; Willow is anything but and, contrary to first impressions, the trouble maker. Sitka has adopted Sharon; Willow me.

Have had some close calls with wild turkeys and, unfortunately, wild pigs. Unfortunate for the pigs; they have killed at least three.

We know the woods well enough to know where the deer, pigs and turkeys can be found most often, so we stay well away. However, Willow... yes sweet Willow... chased one out of the brush. She chased it into Sweetwater creek, where she and Sitka tried to drown it. Finally, got the dogs away. Sitka responded to Sharon after she (Sitka) tired out; but Willow wanted to "stay and play".

We try to run them in the neighborhood at least 3 nights during the week and about 4-6 miles on Wednesday; on the week-ends they get about 6+ miles each day. Summer is tough, but we put on the water shoes and hike the streams. Willow is always lead and usually finds the way up or down stream. Guess she feels the bottom with her feet and adjusts accordingly. Anyway, we have learned that it is best, on land or water, to follow Willow. She is fearless moving across currents. Sitka is cautious-the ultimate slow and steady, but will make the move when necessary.

Best regards for the new year.

Jolene,

Though you might like to have this one of Sitka coming upstream. Willow wanted you to have one of her, too.

We are in the mountains most weekends; the dogs are keeping us young. Last week we did 9 miles on Sat and 6 miles on Sunday. We are careful not to overheat them and keep them near streams as much as possible. These dogs love water. Sitka puts her muzzle in the water up to her eyes; Willow just jumps in a swims around and around and around..

Sitka has been a challenge with other dogs. She won't go after them, but if they run up to within 8-10ft of her, she is a problem. No problem at all with people. Friendly as can be. Hate to do it, but Sharon got a mesh muzzle we put on her when we can't see what coming up the trail-we don't leash them unless the law is around. Willow is no problem with other dogs or people. She just wants to play or have someone rub her belly. We let her run ahead and I can tell by her body language if someone is coming. Sitka usually stays close to Sharon but sometimes we let her run ahead, but as I said, if its through bushes or over terrain that keeps me from seeing down the trail, the muzzle goes on....I really feel badly for her, but after about a min she doesn't seem to mind.

Anyway, just took the images off the camera and thought you might like to see some of your offspring. Sitka's coat is gorgeous. Even other dog owners stop to tell us that. And Willow brings smiles to all when they see her riding shotgun in the SUV.

Jolene,

Some updated photos and videos of Sitka and Willow. Recorded with a cell phone; but Sharon wanted you to have them. We will send some high quality media shortly.

Sitka has become a little too much alpha, so we had some classes last week. Seems she has about a five foot perimeter; but usually no issue as long as it's a male that is showing interest. She has her playmates, but other than those, she has to be watched and encouraged to behave.

Willow, on the other hand... We lets say the more than one person has told us that if she has ever gone missing, she is probably with them. People fall in love with her immediately, even other dog owners... As much as Sitka gets on her case, she gets really upset if she can't be with Sitka. If I finish bathing her at the pet store and take her out to the car, she won't even eat her treat until Sitka comes out.

Speaking of bathing, Sitka loves it. Climbs in the tub and will let you do anything to her. Willow hates her bath and just about jumps out of the tub. But both love swimming in the lake.

Quick question: we are looking for a place to take the dogs along with us snowshoeing. Is there any place in TN that gets a good dose of snow where we can go where hunting is not allowed. Closest seems to be West Virgina.

Hope all is well and the neighbors are behaving,

Hudons Malamutes - Sitka

Jolene,

Sitka has more play groups than either of our children ever had.

I am coming to visit you with my daughter and friend in May. We want to see all the new puppies and maybe bring one home.

(From my husband: Iditarod starts next Saturday. He is going to show Sitka from whence she came. The start is going to be shown on the web.)

Regards,
Sharon (Horwitz)February 2004
